Beer Release: Bourbon Barrel-Aged Honey Ginger

How can Honey Ginger get any better? Well, a few months in Buffalo Trace barrels is a good start.

What started as a small experiment three years ago is back for its biggest run yet. Our first seasonal, Honey Ginger, gained some recognition that first year, winning silver in the Spice, Herb, and Vegetable Beer category at the 2014 Virginia Craft Brewers Fest. That fall, our neighbor Reservoir Distillery had some bourbon barrels kickin’ around, so a barrel-aged version was a natural next step. We liked the results and decided to keep running with it. Others agreed—in 2016, the bourbon barrel–aged Honey Ginger took home bronze at the Virginia Craft Brewers Fest in the Smoked or Wood-Aged Beer category.

This year, we’re doing an even bigger run—a full 30-barrel batch—using Buffalo Trace bourbon barrels. Strong and full-flavored, Honey Ginger is perfect for bourbon barrel aging. The bronze color is a little deeper than the base beer, and the high carbonation brings out the ginger in the aroma. You’ll find huge bourbon and vanilla notes, but this brew is so sweet and smooth that it's easy to forget the ABV.

Join us Saturday for this delicious release, available on draft and in 750 mL bottles—the perfect pairing for your holiday table. Carytown Burgers & Fries food truck will be here with the good eats, so come on by!
